Q: What video types can I upload?
A: We allow MPG, WMV, MOV, AVI, 3GP and MP4 formats to be uploaded.
Q: What are the best video types to upload and why?
A: GamersTube uses a unique system of identifying video files that are compatible with the Flash video player and processes those videos much more quickly.
Try uploading an MP4 or FLV file. Make sure that the index file containing the meta data is at the beginning of the MP4 file or the video will be forced to load completely before the video plays back. If you do not know how to move the index file try this application http://renaun.com/blog/code/qtindexswapper/
Q: What is the max video size?
A: Max video size is set at 500mb.
Q: Could I upload a file slightly larger than the max file size?
A: Sorry at this time we do not have the ability to allow some users to upload larger files, this could be a new feature in the future. UPDATE: We are working on a new user class for 'producers' with a 750mb upload limit and priority conversion time. We will update all users when this upgrade is ready to be rolled out.
Q: How do you encode your videos?
A: We use mencoder to decode and encode videos. We use the x264 codec for video encoding and NeroAAC for audio encoding.
Q: Do you resize the videos?
A: We currently only resize videos that are larger than 720p to bring them down to at least 1280x720 - the maximum size for flash to display without problems.
Q: Why does my small resolution 4:3 video look all stretched on the site?
A: One of our goals here is to be a widescreen progressive video host, so the videos on the site stretch automatically to fill the whole frame. This has been the subject of much debate here at GamersTube.com World HQ and we have looked into giving the video uploader control over the default display of the video. For now users on the site can click on the second icon on the bottom right corner of the player and select 'original', 'scaled', or 'half' to adjust the sizing of the displayed video. Note that embeded videos and the new playlist player should display without stretching automatically.
Q: I uploaded a video but it's blank with audio. What went wrong?
A: This could be caused by non-standard aspect ratios. For example 1:1.53. We have taken steps to recognize these videos and encode them properly, however, if you have a video our system misses simply try rending the video in 4:3 or 16:9 to have it encode properly.
Q: I tried to upload a video but got a pop-up error message about characters etc...
A: For right now video file names must not contain characters like %,$,& etc... and must be no longer than 32 characters in length. Also there cannot be any spaces in the files name.
Q: I uploaded a video, but for some reason it won't play. It just keeps saying 'Video Conversion In Process'.
A1: We are implementing a queue system that will contact you when your video has been converted. The message you see states that the video is in the conversion process.
A2: We are in Beta Phase III testing and as such our conversion process gets a tweak from time to time. You can use the contact form to notify us if you think it has been taking to long and we will restart the process if it has been interrupted. Of if the file was small simply go into your 'my videos' area and erase the video and reupload.
A3: If you have uploaded a large MP4 file please expect extra long encoding times as these files are very resource intensive. - the queue system and new hardware upgrades will help bring these conversion times down.
Q: Can I upload videos from YouTube?
A: That is not currently an option
Q: I have a video file on my website I would like to upload. Can I just upload with a web link instead of downloading it then uploading it?
A: This is a feature we are working on and hope to have installed soon.
Q: I uploaded a video file that appeared to convert, generated a thumbnail but will not play. Can you fix this?
A: This issue has been fixed during beta phase II. However, if you experience this issue please contact us immediately for assistance.
Q: The video is loading slowly, is your site that popular?
A: Our server gets under heavy load from time to time as videos become more popular. While we have the ability to alleviate much of this pressure instantaneously there may be times when we cannot compensate fast enough. Please check back in a few minutes and make sure your connection is working fine.
Q: I would like to convert a video but don't know how. Can you help?
A: 1. download the 'Any Video Converter' from here: Download.com 2. Figure it out =]
Q: I uploaded my video but when it was done it logged me out. Will my video still convert?
A: This issue was fixed during Beta Phase I. However, if it does occur please contact us immediately so we can look into the issue.
Q: I tried to upload a video and it's all choppy after the upload. What is wrong?
A: This issue has been fixed during beta Phase I. However, if you are still experiencing please make sure you upload videos no larger than 1280x720 (720p)>
Q: If I convert my video file to a new format or lower the quality settings won't that make it look bad?
A: This should no longer be necessary as the problems caused by this were fixed in Beta Phase II.
Q: Can I delete my videos?
A: We did have an old process which removed the physical file from our server permanently and dropped all associated database tables. A future version of this feature will allow you to remove the video from the website and even throw a 404 error when the link is visited but it will keep the video and other information available on our site for TBD period of time to ensure that users video content is kept secure.
In the meantime try setting your video to 'private' this will remove the video in question from view on our website and should introduce the 'noindex' tag so search engine bots remove it from their index.
Q: I have a question not answered here, where can I ask it?
A: You can reach us on the gamerstube contact page
